Jr. and His Soulettes - Psychodelic Sounds

Led by Harold Moore, Jr. (age 10) & helped-out by his sisters, Vinita Marie (9), on bass and organ, Denise Marshall (7), on drums, and Jacqueln Carol (6), on waw-waw organ- Jr. and his Soulettes be one epic Kiddie Funk jam extravaganza. Legend says that approximately 300 copies of the 'original' 1970 issue of Psychodelic Sounds were pressed up but most were damaged (beyond saving) from being shrink wrapped on a meat packing machine.

You'll be listening to this one flat on your back screaming because these four kids were all a shitload cooler at the ages of 6, 7, 9 and 10 than you will ever be in you entire life...

China? - A Noise Compilation

Released on the eDogm netlabel This CD showcases some of the leaders in the experimental music explosion, booming out of China's underground. Heavy destructive and textural, everything you could ask for in an eargasm and more. This is some of the most interestingly composed and orchestrated noise music I have ever heard and as China has only recently opened it's musical borders to the west, quite a rare album.

Kollektiv Turmstrasse

Two DJ's from Germany who combined forces to pioneer some Minimal Techno.
I'm really digging their approach to an often boring and mass-produced genre.
Simple beats combined with lots of space in their mixing makes for some great minimal tracks.

13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds Of...

The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators is a 1966 album by the 13th Floor Elevators. The album's sound, featuring elements of folk, garage, blues and, of course, Psychedelic rock, is notable for its use of the electric jug - WHICH IS FUCKING AWESOME. The November 1966 album title is purported to be the first written use of the word "psychedelic" in reference to the music within.

35007 - Liquid

I'm almost speechless when trying to review this.
                                       The band rarely performs live
and is a type of post-psychedelic-space-rock explosion of the
heaviest funk bass lines and soaring synth trails...

THROATFISTER

Alright one last post before I go. All the contributors to this blog recently did a couple of performances under the band name Throatfister. We're fucking heavy. It really is a live thing only at the moment, but I was so pleased with the whole thing I decided to post a little taste.

Thanks for reading the blog guys, I'll keep you updated and be posting again before you know it.

..................................................................................................

Okay people... (if there's anyone out there)
Story is: I'm going traveling around Asia for 6 months starting this weekend, so unfortunately this will be the last post I make until I settle down in Berlin some time in the second half of this year. The fortunate news is: It's a good one! or I think it is, anyway, but I might just be biased, seeing as it is my first completed album! :D
7 tracks, 37 minutes and 52 seconds long, and completely untitled, and, of course, totally free. I figure I will title it after my journey around Asia, something ought to come to me during that time..
In the meantime I hope you enjoy it, and have a nice year.

If you like it please comment, and if you have a suggestion for a name (for either my moniker or the album itself), that would be fantastic.

Farlung - The Belief Module (1998)

Supersonic Space Rock in its own field. This band wears its influences well, while still managing to create its own cosmos.

Farlung - The Belief Module (1998)
If you've never heard of Farflung then you have been missing out on some of the most pleasurable space-rock around. The Belief Module was played and recorded using vintage instruments and equipment, which reveals the bands dedication and attitude towards their music. This album excels at combining layers of simple guitar and synth lines to create a wall of blistering Krautrock influenced space rock. The distinct infiltration of 60s acid rock (both mainstream and more cutting edge) is evident through the entire album, but is perhaps most evident in Fingers Of The Sky Catcher, parts of which which almost beckon you to recall the earliest Syd Barrett led Pink Floyd glittering gems. Gleam adds a more 60s pop style to the mix, yet that manages not to be detrimental to the song. The systematic and purposeful fusion of classical acid rock and modern synth space rock makes this album appealing at many levels, and to a wide audience. Despite the fact that both Hawkwind and acid rock inspiration are quite evident through out, this album forges a cosmic path all it's own.

Loud, noisy & out-of-control-psychedelic-never-ending-tracks? Absolutely!

This album is rare and out-of-print, but you can still get it here.

Spark - Blow On It (2008)

Spark is Matt Willox, the prolific Vancouver British Columbia-based n5MD artist had his start on mp3.com where he debuted the first real Spark track, “Are We Happy People?” It was at this point in his life that he discovered his true sound; to create uniquely mangled yet melodically destructive electronics. Always one to break preconceived notions of music production techniques, Spark manages to reinvent himself with each release by realizing the differences between conventional musical approaches and significantly unique arrangements of sound. Currently working on songs based on thousands of different sounds and rhythms, played by hand, Spark’s relationship with his music is one that is personalized to reflect what is currently happening in his life. By crystallizing new ideas and venturing beyond wandering experimentation, expect to hear a new chapter in Spark’s library of fractured sounds.

His latest album Blow On It is an incredible masterwork of bass, time and electrical impulses.

Gnaw Their Tongues

Gnaw Their Tongues make some of the best new underground black metal around. A one man project alternatively atmospheric-punishing-dirty-experimental and always with bottomless darkness, this is extreme stuff that not everyone is going to be able to appreciate, but for those with the right ears (and balls), there has been some real treasures released since his first release in 2006. I recommend going to his myspace page and downloading the three free albums available there.

Where Lake Te Anau lies among the lofty mountains of the South Island there was once a long gully that was the home of a section of the Waitaha tribe. In the middle of the village was a spring that was said to be bottomless. No one dared go near it except the tohunga and his wife, who were its guardians. There was an old saying that if a common mortal gazed on the water, disaster would befall the village. It was safe from prying eyes, and the tohunga drew from it enough fish to supply everyone in the village.
Rumours of war on the coast reached the remote kainga, and came to the ears of Te Horo, the tohunga. As some of his friends were likely to be involved, he decided to go to the coast to find out what was happening. After warning his wife to keep everyone away from the tapu spring during his abscence, he set off.
The tohunga's wife was young and beautiful, and had a clandestine lover among the villagers. As soon as her husband was out of sight she called her lover. Like two mischievious children, they crept through the grove of trees and peered into the clear water of the spring.
To their horror the water rose in a smooth tide. In a moment it was ankle deep, and before the sun had travelled far across the sky, the valley was covered by a sheet of water that stood high above the flooded valley.
Far away the tohunga rounded a bluff and looked back at his home. When he saw the lake lying between the brooding hills, he knew that his trust had been betrayed. He was homeless and alone. Long years of loneliness were all that lay before him.

Tokyo Flashbacks

Great work from adorable P.S.F. label, a series of psychedelic/experimental/improve compilations presenting the contemporary tendencies of these Japanese bands. This is a good place to start with the Poor Strong Factory (P.S.F. -- originally stood for Psychedelic Speed Freaks, which was the name High Rise first used for their group) label -- unquestionably the best, weirdest, wildest currently ongoing label in Japan.

Exclusive tracks by Ghost, Fushitsusha, White Heaven, High Rise, Yura Yura, Kingdom, Marble Sheep, Shizuka, Overhang Party, Haino, Musica Transonic, Shizuka, Broomdusters, Pukapuka Brians, On-na Kodomo, Akiyama-Sugimoto, Kakashi, Construction, Psychedelic Crazy Horse, Hikyo String Quintet, Onna, Ainotamenishis, Kinky Pigeon, Genshi...AND MORE

The overloaded superbly psychedelic distortion and simple, modern, psych-underground destruction going on here is honestly breathtaking.

AKA - Forever in Rock

This is a great album from the late 70's by the great prog gods from Indonesia, AKA. Afro-powered heavy distortion meets mathematic funky beats and undead anti-stoner vocals of Ucok AKA will easily bring your house down to the very bits. Sober jams but not for the weak hearts.

Sickboy - Time To Play (2008)

Belgian producer Sickboy provides more than enough gabber destruction for even the hardest ravers on his latest effort. Quality breakcore breaks provide moments of respite from the devastating hardcore pulse of the record, and Sickboy's sense of humour is unrestrained here, incorporating some of the most ridiculous samples I've heard in a while. This is definitely his catchiest, and in my opinion best work yet. For me, gabber is still one of those genres that surprises me that it can actually be good, and here, it certainly is.

Pocahaunted - Island Diamonds (2008)

Pocahaunted are a female duo who make... dubby drones fused with tripped out hippy/shaman chanting?

RAKSHA MANCHAM X3

Here are three album by the amazing tribal/post-industrial band Raksha Mancham. This Belgian group's music is strongly derived from the music of indigenous peoples worldwide, and is played on native instruments from Tibet, Egypt, Brazil, Morocco, Mali, Nepal and the Cameroon, along with many other acoustic percussion, wind and string instruments.

PHYIDAR 1992

About: ""Phyidar" may be defined as the "second broadcasting" of the (Buddhist) "doctrine" in Tibet. It has deep connections with the history of Buddhism - as Buddhism was initially introduced in Tibet during the VIIth century and was eclipsed during the late IXth, the Xth and the early XIth century. There was a second "broadcasting" of the (Buddhist) doctrine in Tibet in the early XIth century.
This first CD of Raksha Mancham is a compilation of the first three vynil albums of the band, plus several new tracks."

CHOS KHOR 1993

About: ""Chös Khor" refers to a Tibetan concept, that can be translated as "the holy circle", "the holy enclosure" or "the holy enclave". "Chös Khor" represents the universe in which the human beings live, the world they inhabit. The musical themes developed in these recordings refer to human populations and their natural environment. "Chös Khor" offers visions of different parts of the World. So by creating that music, the aim of Raksha Mancham is to produce that vision of the World by suggesting images in the mind of the listener."

GHAZELS 1994

About: "The titles "Ghazels" (also "Ghazal" or "Ghzali") refers to beautiful girls" ("beauties") as well as lyrical poems, love poems or love chants and comes from the great Persian lyrical poet Shemseddin Hafiz who described his "ghazels" in such a way : "At the hour of parting, by going away from you, my eyes came emplty of light by dint of weeping"."
