Rabbits - Lower Forms (2011)

There's something special about Rabbits. Is it the lo-fi tone? Is it the driving force of the barbaric mid-paced sludge riffing? Is it the vocalist's unhinged, slightly mad anger? Or is it the vicious combination of all these elements? Check last box.

Stuntd Growth Returns

Long time no speak, to yall who came for return visits.
After two years, I've finally set myself up with a PC in my new home in South-East Asia, and despite the brutal exile of one of our contributors, Stuntdgrowth will be returning soon, bringing back the Internet's most diverse range of music that kicks arse. First upload will be tonight. I'm not going to re-up any links that are down, not yet anyway, as internet connection here is far from fast, unfortunately, but hey what do you expect in the third world?

Also check out my new blog if you're interested in reading some absurdist superhero comedy. First chapter available.

Biosphere - Substrata

Biosphere, Geir Jenssenm, is well known for his "arctic ambient" style, his use of music loops, and peculiar samples from sci-fi sources.

His 1997 album Substrata, mixing chilling atmospheric tones with ambient samples of ice, snow, forests and Norwegian radio broadcasts from the artist's homeland, is generally seen as one of the all time classic ambient albums.

chill

Ulver - Blood Inside

Ulver (Norwegian for “wolves”) is a multi-disciplinary musical trio from Norway. Since their first, folklore-influenced black metal release in 1993, Ulver’s musical style has been fluid and increasingly eclectic, blending genres from avant-garde rock and trip hop through symphonic and chamber traditions, right to noise and experimental music, with heavy reliance on electronic and ambient techniques.

Their influences are endless, but the way they combine them on this album is masterful. Black metal, Synth-Rock, Jazz, Blues, Classical, Industrial, Ambient, Religious Chant, Folk, and quite possibly every genre in between.

seriously

Amanaz - Africa

From Zambia, Africa, 1975. LP in an edition of 450 numbered copies, with glossy heavy sleeve, 180 gram pressing. Amanaz was formed in 1973. Three songs are in the native language Bemba, and 9 songs in English, recorded in Kitwe, the 3rd biggest city in Zambia up north. Musically, it goes in the same direction as Blo, The Witch and Question Mark, but this album is way cooler and stoned with amazing fuzz guitar all over which sounds like an African version of early Cream. The cover makes it look very traditional but after a few spins, you are aware that this one is very special. It's so cool, so tightly-produced and easily compares with UK underground albums with a touch of African beats. Still completely unknown, so this album has not been scored yet by the collectors' scene.

A real surprise

Glenn Branca - Symphony No. 6 (Devil Choirs at the Gates of Heaven)

This is one demonic album. The pure evil conjured by the walls of micro-tuned electric guitars. will make you bow .

power

Urfaust - Verraterischer, Nichtswurdiger Geist

Another Urfaust classic. Black metal at its most supreme. So much evil from such an unstopable two-piece.

Ragnarök Mystiker

Forgotten Silence - Bya Bahame Neem

My latest upload is the sixth album by Forgottent Silence, an experimental death metal band from the Czech Republic founded in 1993. While their earlier albums are mostly death metal with a progressive/art rock overtone. Their later music is much more mystical, with a strong middle eastern influence.

This album is awesome

Chrome - Half Machine Lip Moves

Legendary industrial rockers Chrome. Science-fiction, alienation, cynicism and paranoia wrapped up in some absolutely amazing grooves. Genre-less really, but cited as being one of the earliest industrial bands (sound more like psychedelic rock to me).

Dig this music

13

Today I’m gonna go doom on your asses. Here with what is, to the best of my knowledge, every single recording ever made by short-lived and mostly-female NY doom/crust quartet, 13. During their relatively short tenure they did split 7″s with Eyehategod and Grief and appeared on a few comps. The guitarist Liz Buckingham went on to join the masters of psychedelic stoner doom Electric Wizard!

Women have never rocked out so hard and so fucking heavy.

Destroy yourselves

Daedelus - Love To Make Music To

Daedelus is a proponent of Edwardian dandyism for the Internet age, and his electronic whimsy has been influenced equally by Coldcut's chopped-up beats and Bernard Herrmann's orchestral Vertigo. But on Love to Make Music To, the L.A. producer unveils a nocturnal soundtrack toughened up by booty bass, hardcore techno, and coked-out club rap. Daedelus' furious stylistic shifts are engrossing. I can't believe I've only just found out about this guy.

Deadly!

Sergei Prokofiev - Peter & The Wolf

This is the earliest classical composition I remember hearing as I little child, and an absolute classic.

Various Artists - Proibidao C.V: Forbidden Gang Funk From Rio de Janeiro

PROIBIDÃO is the name given to a certain kind of electronic funk music produced in Brazilian favelas, especially in Rio de Janeiro where it started to appear in the beginning of the 90’s as a parallel phenomenon to the growth of drug gangs along the city’s more than 600 slums. A raw mix of live funk vocals and Miami bass structures, these anonymous funk tracks are spread illegally by DJs and gang sponsored parties. Proibidão is a raw musical genre that captures the dark side of Brazilian favelas. The explicit lyrics of apology to drug gangs and the violent content makes them illegal to broadcast through radio or as live public events. Proibidão can only be heard in the bailes or dances that the gangs organize and that run every day of the week in different locations in the slums around Rio. The production of a Proibidão occurs in different ways. A DJ spins Miami bass rhythms straight from sample CDs, and an MC talks on top of it, mainly live in street bailes and then recorded through a simple multichannel to a minidisk or simply straight. No mix is done and only sometimes an extra production is done. The gang leaders, to spread the respect and love for the gang as well as hate to the other gangs, finance the bailes and hire the DJs and sound systems. At most parties this is recorded live and spread then as an mp3 or CD to different other DJs and bailes. Its life runs a minimum of 6 months and depending on it’s popularity it can go on for more than one year.

The selection featured on this CD compiles music recorded live during the beginning of 2003 in different favelas from Zona Sul, South Rio de Janeiro, a zone once controlled by the drug gang called Comando Vermelho, mainly responsible for the city’s growing rates of homicides and power corruption, as well as Rio’s and Brazil’s growing drug consumption. C.V Comando Vermelho (Red Command) is a criminal organization that was founded in 1979 in the prison Cândido Mendes, on the island Ilha Grande (RJ), as a connection of common prisoners and militants of the Falange Vermelha (Red Phalanx), which fought the military dictatorship. During the entire 1990's the criminal organization was the strongest in all of Rio de Janeiro, but today the principal leaders have been arrested or are dead, and the organization is not as strong. The Comando Vermelho still control parts of the city and seeing streets tagged with "CV" is common in many favelas in Rio de Janeiro. This CD is in no way an apology for these groups but a document to portray a moment in time in Rio de Janeiro musical and social history. All audio imperfections are left as they were when collected as these tracks are the only remaining documents of this music. Recorded and assembled by filmmaker Carlos Casas courtesy of some anonymous MCs and DJs in different bailes along the favelas of Zona Sul, Rio de Janeiro during March-April 2003.

Kousokuya - Ray Night 1991-1992 Live

the legendary and ultra-obscure Japanese psychedelic rock group Kousokuya. Hailing from Tokyo, they have donated some spectacular tracks to the first two volumes of the Tokyo Flashback compilation series on the PSF label, and self-released an extremely limited LP in 1991. An early press release for the band describes them well (in comical broken English):

Quote:
"The band name Kousokuya means 'a ray night.' Since 1984 they have been playing their own high volume heavy driven avant-garde psychedelic music. Kaneko, he always plays guitar with full of feedback. One of the outstanding guitar players in the underground scene. No one can play guitar like him. Mick, she plays bass and is also main vocalist. She sings like an angle flying from the other side of the this world. Takahashi, he plays drums and percussion. He had previously played many other free formed rock music."

Humour aside their album Ray Night 1991-1992 Live is 69 minutes of pure expansive psychedelic nirvana (sorry it's live so I don't have the track listing).

Öde - Schimmenwoud

I've really been feeling the black metal lately.

Anyone for some dutch satanism?

Excellent album by this "new" band from holland, raw melancholic black metal with excellent composition, piercing vocals and dark atmosphere; one of the best releases I heard from this country in a while.

Nurse With Wound - A Sucked Orange

Recorded between 1979-1988 this recording is an excellent introduction for the new listener and an entry into the world of brilliance.

Jr. and His Soulettes - Psychodelic Sounds

Led by Harold Moore, Jr. (age 10) & helped-out by his sisters, Vinita Marie (9), on bass and organ, Denise Marshall (7), on drums, and Jacqueln Carol (6), on waw-waw organ- Jr. and his Soulettes be one epic Kiddie Funk jam extravaganza. Legend says that approximately 300 copies of the 'original' 1970 issue of Psychodelic Sounds were pressed up but most were damaged (beyond saving) from being shrink wrapped on a meat packing machine.

You'll be listening to this one flat on your back screaming because these four kids were all a shitload cooler at the ages of 6, 7, 9 and 10 than you will ever be in you entire life...

China? - A Noise Compilation

Released on the eDogm netlabel This CD showcases some of the leaders in the experimental music explosion, booming out of China's underground. Heavy destructive and textural, everything you could ask for in an eargasm and more. This is some of the most interestingly composed and orchestrated noise music I have ever heard and as China has only recently opened it's musical borders to the west, quite a rare album.

Konono No. 1 - Congotronics

Konono No. 1 was founded over 25 years ago by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likembé (thumb piano). The band's line-up includes three electric likembés (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts, and plugged into amplifiers. There's also a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system featuring archaic megaphones.

The musicians come from an area which sits right across the border between Congo and Angola. Their repertoire draws largely on Bazombo trance music, but they've had to incorporate the originally-unwanted distorsions of their sound system. This has made them develop a unique style which, from a sonic viewpoint, has accidentally connected them with the aesthetics of the most experimental forms of rock and electronic music, as much through their sounds than through their sheer volume (they play in front of a wall of speakers) and their merciless grooves.

Kollektiv Turmstrasse

Two DJ's from Germany who combined forces to pioneer some Minimal Techno.
I'm really digging their approach to an often boring and mass-produced genre.
Simple beats combined with lots of space in their mixing makes for some great minimal tracks.

13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds Of...

The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators is a 1966 album by the 13th Floor Elevators. The album's sound, featuring elements of folk, garage, blues and, of course, Psychedelic rock, is notable for its use of the electric jug - WHICH IS FUCKING AWESOME. The November 1966 album title is purported to be the first written use of the word "psychedelic" in reference to the music within.

THROATFISTER

Alright one last post before I go. All the contributors to this blog recently did a couple of performances under the band name Throatfister. We're fucking heavy. It really is a live thing only at the moment, but I was so pleased with the whole thing I decided to post a little taste.

Thanks for reading the blog guys, I'll keep you updated and be posting again before you know it.

..................................................................................................

Okay people... (if there's anyone out there)
Story is: I'm going traveling around Asia for 6 months starting this weekend, so unfortunately this will be the last post I make until I settle down in Berlin some time in the second half of this year. The fortunate news is: It's a good one! or I think it is, anyway, but I might just be biased, seeing as it is my first completed album! :D
7 tracks, 37 minutes and 52 seconds long, and completely untitled, and, of course, totally free. I figure I will title it after my journey around Asia, something ought to come to me during that time..
In the meantime I hope you enjoy it, and have a nice year.

If you like it please comment, and if you have a suggestion for a name (for either my moniker or the album itself), that would be fantastic.

Farlung - The Belief Module (1998)

Supersonic Space Rock in its own field. This band wears its influences well, while still managing to create its own cosmos.

Farlung - The Belief Module (1998)
If you've never heard of Farflung then you have been missing out on some of the most pleasurable space-rock around. The Belief Module was played and recorded using vintage instruments and equipment, which reveals the bands dedication and attitude towards their music. This album excels at combining layers of simple guitar and synth lines to create a wall of blistering Krautrock influenced space rock. The distinct infiltration of 60s acid rock (both mainstream and more cutting edge) is evident through the entire album, but is perhaps most evident in Fingers Of The Sky Catcher, parts of which which almost beckon you to recall the earliest Syd Barrett led Pink Floyd glittering gems. Gleam adds a more 60s pop style to the mix, yet that manages not to be detrimental to the song. The systematic and purposeful fusion of classical acid rock and modern synth space rock makes this album appealing at many levels, and to a wide audience. Despite the fact that both Hawkwind and acid rock inspiration are quite evident through out, this album forges a cosmic path all it's own.

Loud, noisy & out-of-control-psychedelic-never-ending-tracks? Absolutely!

This album is rare and out-of-print, but you can still get it here.

Spark - Blow On It (2008)

Spark is Matt Willox, the prolific Vancouver British Columbia-based n5MD artist had his start on mp3.com where he debuted the first real Spark track, “Are We Happy People?” It was at this point in his life that he discovered his true sound; to create uniquely mangled yet melodically destructive electronics. Always one to break preconceived notions of music production techniques, Spark manages to reinvent himself with each release by realizing the differences between conventional musical approaches and significantly unique arrangements of sound. Currently working on songs based on thousands of different sounds and rhythms, played by hand, Spark’s relationship with his music is one that is personalized to reflect what is currently happening in his life. By crystallizing new ideas and venturing beyond wandering experimentation, expect to hear a new chapter in Spark’s library of fractured sounds.

His latest album Blow On It is an incredible masterwork of bass, time and electrical impulses.

Gnaw Their Tongues

Gnaw Their Tongues make some of the best new underground black metal around. A one man project alternatively atmospheric-punishing-dirty-experimental and always with bottomless darkness, this is extreme stuff that not everyone is going to be able to appreciate, but for those with the right ears (and balls), there has been some real treasures released since his first release in 2006. I recommend going to his myspace page and downloading the three free albums available there.

Where Lake Te Anau lies among the lofty mountains of the South Island there was once a long gully that was the home of a section of the Waitaha tribe. In the middle of the village was a spring that was said to be bottomless. No one dared go near it except the tohunga and his wife, who were its guardians. There was an old saying that if a common mortal gazed on the water, disaster would befall the village. It was safe from prying eyes, and the tohunga drew from it enough fish to supply everyone in the village.
Rumours of war on the coast reached the remote kainga, and came to the ears of Te Horo, the tohunga. As some of his friends were likely to be involved, he decided to go to the coast to find out what was happening. After warning his wife to keep everyone away from the tapu spring during his abscence, he set off.
The tohunga's wife was young and beautiful, and had a clandestine lover among the villagers. As soon as her husband was out of sight she called her lover. Like two mischievious children, they crept through the grove of trees and peered into the clear water of the spring.
To their horror the water rose in a smooth tide. In a moment it was ankle deep, and before the sun had travelled far across the sky, the valley was covered by a sheet of water that stood high above the flooded valley.
Far away the tohunga rounded a bluff and looked back at his home. When he saw the lake lying between the brooding hills, he knew that his trust had been betrayed. He was homeless and alone. Long years of loneliness were all that lay before him.

Tokyo Flashbacks

Great work from adorable P.S.F. label, a series of psychedelic/experimental/improve compilations presenting the contemporary tendencies of these Japanese bands. This is a good place to start with the Poor Strong Factory (P.S.F. -- originally stood for Psychedelic Speed Freaks, which was the name High Rise first used for their group) label -- unquestionably the best, weirdest, wildest currently ongoing label in Japan.

Exclusive tracks by Ghost, Fushitsusha, White Heaven, High Rise, Yura Yura, Kingdom, Marble Sheep, Shizuka, Overhang Party, Haino, Musica Transonic, Shizuka, Broomdusters, Pukapuka Brians, On-na Kodomo, Akiyama-Sugimoto, Kakashi, Construction, Psychedelic Crazy Horse, Hikyo String Quintet, Onna, Ainotamenishis, Kinky Pigeon, Genshi...AND MORE

The overloaded superbly psychedelic distortion and simple, modern, psych-underground destruction going on here is honestly breathtaking.

AKA - Forever in Rock

This is a great album from the late 70's by the great prog gods from Indonesia, AKA. Afro-powered heavy distortion meets mathematic funky beats and undead anti-stoner vocals of Ucok AKA will easily bring your house down to the very bits. Sober jams but not for the weak hearts.
